Lab Salon's Fourth Annual Cuts For Coats

Its that time of year again, Lab Salon's annual Cuts for Coats Event will be held on Sunday January 19th, 2014 from 11- 5pm at 541 Johnson Street. For the past five years the owners and staff have proudly hosted this amazing charity event.
All coats that are collected will be donated to the Our Place Society to help keep the folks of Victoria City warm for the rest of the winter season.
The salon's doors will be open at 11am but it's recommend that you come down a bit earlier to line up as this event is a first come, first serve booking. Staff will give you a hair appointment time once you have checked in, so you can go shopping at Victoria's fab boutiques as they are so close to the salon or grab a coffee rather than wait. Bring your winter coats as a  donation and you'll receive your haircut service for free.
James J-Feud Rustin will be manning the decks once again, bringing his legendary style of house to the Lab Salon team. Please 'Like' and 'Share' so that Lab Salon can collect as many coats as possible to help those in need.

50 Shades of Harriet Grey

Victoria and British Columbia fashion followers and fans know that there are tons of jewelry designers and some huge talent in this area. Stop into any local boutique and a bauble or trinket from some local designer is guaranteed to catch your eye. The rest of the world is starting to taking notice too, with local designers popping up in the pages of fashion magazines such as the Vancouver based Lou Lou Magazine, Elle Canada and Fashion Magazine, not to mention on the bodies of fashion savvy people all around the world.
There are tons of great designers out there, but one that has caught my eye as of late is Harriet Grey.

Harriet Grey is a jewelry line that was born from their sister line of Mimi & Marge in 2008. Based in Vancouver, BC the fashion line is big and bold, cheap and cheerful, sexy and sassy, fun and funky. In a nutshell... Harriet Grey is jewelry to go with everything.

I am starting to collect quite a few lovely trinkets from this amazing local line at Najoie, a great little boutique on Johnson Street. I also work at the shop so it's like Christmas when the little brown boxes from Harriet Grey arrive.

Evolution Of Smooth

I am slightly (as some of you know, that's an understatement) obsessed with lip balm and lip glosses and I am constantly searching by bag for them to reapply. Recently I have spotted in magazines and with celebs a really neat looking gloss called EOS (Evolution of Smooth).

I have heard nothing but great things and decided to try it for myself as the balms I have tried in the past have had so-so results for me. Evolution of Smooth is a pretty accurate name for this amazing little sphere. I've been using EOS now for a couple of days and my lips stay smoother for longer. The balm lasts on my lips but the main reason I am loving this, is that I'm not reaching for that reapplication constantly.

EOS balms come in a range of fresh, fruity flavours but my favorite is the irresistible honeydew with moisture that keeps my lips feeling fresh, soft and smooth all day long.

How To Buy A Cashmere Sweater

Winter... I understand that braving the West Coast elements while looking chic is no easy task, but there is a quick fix that will keep you still looking fabulous. It's time to break out those warm, cozy, soft sweaters (especially cashmere sweaters), and this winter, I am seeing more and more of the super lush sweaters hitting the shop shelves. I know, the luxe knit can be a bit of investment, but cashmere can be worth the cost considering how chic and refined it looks, plus even the finest of weaves will keep you nice and toasty through winter.

Here are some great tips on how to buy a cashmere sweater...

Know your fibers. The best fibers are found in goats wool. The length, cross section and colour of the individual fibers will determine the quality of raw cashmere. Longer, finer fibers are softer and will resist pilling. Also, the whitest fibers provide a more beautiful appearance.

Read the label; the most expensive options should be 100% cashmere. A cheaper blend should have at least 10% cashmere. You should also make note on how well the label is attached to the garment; sometimes that reflects the care taken with the garment. If the knit is made in Scotland or Italy, that's a good sign!

Is it hand knitted? A $500 sweater will be knit entirely by hand (you will notice that the cuffs are identical inside and out). Cheaper versions are lock stitched; that is, panels are sewn together by a machine.

Ply is the number of strands twisted together to achieve thickness. The higher the ply, the more substantial the feel. Gauge is how tightly those strands are twisted. Cashmere can work for all seasons, depending on ply and gauge.

When buying an investment sweater, make sure to keep figure issues in mind. V-neck and crewneck sweaters are universally flattering. Turtleneck sweaters can elongate the torso if you have a short waist. Boatneck sweaters help balance you out if you have larger hips. Neutrals like grey or beige have the longest style longevity.
