Know What Suits Your Age

Spring is fastly approaching and it's time to start your spring cleaning, rummaging through the old and start planning out a new wardrobe. Here are a few little tips, tricks and notes on what to wear, when to follow the rules and when to break them.

A woman in her 20's never wants to look matronly; beware of the nude nylons or pants with pleats. A Mom in her 40's should be weary of looking like she raided her teenage daughters closet. She should cover her midriff and nix the rips on the jeans. Mini skirts are off the table after a certain age and if you're 50 or beyond, watch the sleeveless tops and you should pass on the plunging necklines.

On the up side to knowing what suits your age, it comes down to personal transformation. As you age your body changes, fact, but so does your taste, your budget and your lifestyle. Dressing your age is really about making sure your clothes reflect who you are now and upping the quality of your threads year by year.

If you are in your 20's:
Rules schmules...You've got permission to experiment. Be playful as almost anything goes when you`re in your 20`s. From pretty, girly dresses to edgier ensembles. Take chances and try unexpected parings and silhouettes. You will probably luck into a great look or a new shape for you. Show some leg. The time will pass when you can wear challenging or trendy lengths.
Layer on the bangles, the long necklaces, the bijoux from various bygone eras.

If you are in your 30's:
You can wear anything... with sophistication. Up the quality. As your tastes inch upward, start investing in things like a smart black coat or an amazing day-to-night blazer. Get more serious about the fit of what you are putting on. Since you can still wear just about anything, mix it up! Don't forget to bring a few wild cards into the dressing room with you now and then.
Embrace your sexiness. You're in your 30's and suddenly, you have the confidence and authority to undo that next button or pull off a pencil skirt.

If you are in your 40's:
Confidence becomes you... all you need is a little editing. You must invest. Buy a few standout items like a designer suit or an incredible evening coat that you'll wear in the years to come. Nix the frills, steer clear of fussy ruffles, girly prints and shapeless suits. Don't forget to keep your edge and combine a few currently cool pieces that work with the more classic pieces and styles.

If you are in your 50's:
Dress to impress, but learn to camouflage.
Add your own accents. Splurge on statement pieces. A chunky necklace or a signature cuff has more impact than a sedated string of pearls or tennis bracelet.
Want more impact? Dress for it by choosing a monochromatic outfit as they look ageless. Keep your casual look current with coordinated pieces in fabrics.

If you are in your 60's:
Elegance becomes you. Feel free to splurge cause you deserve it.
Look for modern cuts when you are in the dressing room as you will still want to look in-the-moment.
Remember to cover up when you have to and for evenings out, a chic wrap will be your best friend.

Pressed Flower Lollipops

There's something about Spring that just gets my heart all in a flutter... Flowers. I love them. It's something lovely, pretty, magical, spiritual and free. I have pressed flowers at home to remind me of what they looked like freshly cut, when I received them and who ever so sweetly gave them to me.

Also, being a huge fan of the Free People Blog, I am sharing their amazingly awesome homemade pressed flower lollipop idea:

Wake Up This Long Weekend With Trillium Soaps & Candles

The weather is starting to climb its way up by a few degrees today and the days are seeming to be a little bit longer. Celebrate this long weekend by lazing luxuriously in bed after a long night’s slumber. Allow the morning sun to peek through your blinds to gently wake you up.
Waiting until it's absolutely necessary before stirring, stretching, yawning and smiling to greet the world this weekend. These are the morning’s final steps to starting the day feeling fully refreshed.

The final step to making your skin feel fully refreshed for your morning shower is Trillium’s Goat's Milk Soap. This weekend, try apricot and oatmeal, for another reminder of that perfect morning and that Spring is just around the corner.
Made with real apricots and oatmeal, our soaps has added added shea, mango, cocoa butters and delicious coconut oil with a hint of botanicals to provide the ultimate restorative and refreshing experience.

Find Trillium's Apricot and Oatmeal Goat's Milk Soap and their other fine and locally made products at one of these great Victoria shop http://www.trilliumsoapsandcandles.ca/pages/locations.

Spring Wardrobe Basics

The mornings are still chilly and crisp, after all it IS only February. But in the retail world, Spring is starting to arrive in all the lovely local shops! So, lets start with the basics as you can wear them now on the warmer winter afternoons with a stylish sweater or cardigan!

Good quality tee shirts and tanks can form the basis of an incredible outfit. Often, I'll take inspiration from our West Coast, a laid-back but pulled together look.

Lets talk about the cut. If you are looking to elongate your neck, the best cuts for you will be scoop necks and v-necks. Any cut that takes a plunge is going to make your neck look longer, but one that ends right under your throat can sometimes be unflattering. What I'm saying is letting your collarbones show is very sexy, most say more sexy than showing off your cleavage because you just give a hint of bare skin minus the clichéd and the obvious.
Scoop necks and v-necks are very casual and can be worn just with your favorite pair of jeans, capris, shorts or even a mini skirt. If you are looking for a more formal look, try a square-neck tee. These tees are best paired with dress pants or a pencil skirt. With this look, you will find balance between the broadening effect of the square neck on the top as they are more narrow on your bottom half.

Some styles of tanks fit differently than others and I have found that sometimes you might have to get them a size bigger than you need just to make sure that they're long enough. If they are a bit loose on the sides, you can fix that with an extra layer and still keep yourself intact. Length is key as this will give you a much more pulled together look and a nicer shape. When shopping for tanks, pay attention to the fabrics as lycra always seems to have the uncanny ability of making the tank cling to your body in places you'd rather it didn't. Always try to opt for pure cotton tanks.

Use of colour is just as important as the fit of your tees and tanks. Colours that I recommend for these basics are black, navy, slate grey, white and cream. These are the most useful colours then it comes to your wardrobe as they go with almost everything. I have found that a good fitting tee is hard to find, so if you find one, pick up another in a different colour, this way you will still love the style but can use them for different occasions.

Patterns or no patterns. Well, I am not a huge fan of just patterns as they can be a bit overwhelming on a tee but I do love my vintage Guns 'N Roses, Micheal Jackson and Rolling Stones rock 'n roll tees. How can anyone not enjoy them?
Wear these tees with a good pair of jeans, heels or boots you'll look cool, casual and show that you have a good sense of flair and fun which is always attractive!
